Cape Cod Bike Tour - Quiet times on the Cape - Jun. 5-10, 2011 | Jun. 12-17, 2011

Our Cape Cod bike tour offers cyclists the opportunity to pedal along the paths once known only to the Wampanoag Indians, to bike along the seashore and to tour quaint harbor villages.  Once accessible only by boat or stagecoach, the Cape Cod area became a popular tourist attraction only after the first railroad tracks were extended to the area in 1847. This beautiful seashore area became a popular summer destination for New Englanders, and now thousands flock to the area every year to enjoy the ocean, the beaches, the islands and the quaint fishing villages. Bike Escapades is offering the opportunity to enjoy it all at a leisurely pace as our group bikes along seaside paths and wooded trails.

Cape Cod Bike Tour - Itinerary

Cape Cod Bike Tour, Day 1: Cape Cod Bike Trip cyclists will meet in Falmouth and then bike along the Shining Sea Bikeway to Woods Hole. Once the paths of the Wampanoag Indians, this route later became the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad route from Buzzards Bay, through North and West Falmouth, around Woods Hole and into Falmouth Station. This railroad right-of-way provides a flat and even surface for biking, and it is the only path that winds along the seashore through cranberry bogs, salt marshes, woodlands and a busy harbor.
Lodging:  The Palmer House Inn (D).

Cape Cod Bike Tour, Day 2: Cape Cod Bike Tour cyclists will board the Island Queen for a scenic ride across the Vineyard Sound to the beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard. Sightings of sea turtles and sea birds are possible, so keep a sharp eye. The island now known as Martha’s Vineyard, vacation spot for wealthy New Englanders, was once the territory of the Wampanoag Indians. As European settlers discovered the island, a busy whaling industry developed. In more modern times, Martha’s Vineyard was the filming location for Jaws, Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge. With a year-round population of almost 15,000, the island’s main industry now is tourism and businesses associated with the tourism industry. On Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod Bike Trip cyclists will have a choice of cycling on bike paths or the island’s well paved roads.
Lodging:  The Palmer House Inn (B, L, D).

Cape Cod Bike Tour, Day 3:  The tour continues along the coast biking on roads with very little traffic through Mara Vista, Menauhant, New Seabury, Osterville to the historic seaport of Hyannis. Originally farming, shipbuilding and reclaiming salt from the sea supported this seaside town, but Hyannis went on to develop into a popular resort destination. Most famous in modern times as the home to the Kennedy clan, Hyannis developed on the south shore of the Cape Cod peninsula that juts into the ocean approximately 100 miles, much of which is beautiful, public beaches.
Lodging: Hyannis Harbor Hotel (B, L).

Cape Cod Bike Tour, Day 4: Departing Hyannis, the group will bike the Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT), which runs for 22 miles from Dennis to Wellfleet. This is an off-road bike trail through the countryside of the cape to scenic Orleans. Developed in another railroad right-of-way, the CCRT has a paved surface for bikers. The trail is recently repaved, well marked and smooth. During the trip, the bike tour will pass several freshwater ponds, cranberry bogs and scenic views. Little country stores along the way give cyclists plenty of opportunity to grab drinks and snacks. Orleans, our destination for the night, has been a fishing town and a site for salt reclamation from the sea, just as many of the other seaside towns along the Cape were. Orleans, apparently a difficult waterway to traverse, saw many shipwrecks and developed an industry of shipwreck and cargo salvaging.
Lodging:  Ship's Knees Inn (B, D).

Cape Cod Bike Tour, Day 5: Biking on the CCRT until it ends in South Wellfleet, the bikers will continue to Provincetown passing the Cape Cod Rail Trail historic Coast Guard Beach, Nauset Light Beach and Lighthouse. After watching the pounding surf we will bike through Wellfleet getting great views of the Cape Cod Bay. This evening the bikers will enjoy a fabulous New England clambake back in Orleans.
Lodging:  Ship's Knees Inn  (B, L, D).

Cape Cod Bike Tour, Day 6: After a delicious breakfast we will travel back to pick up cars in Falmouth, MA and say our farewells. (B)
